Composer Michael Donovan’s chamber opera Memories Beyond The Grave had its world première in 2023 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The piece was remounted in 2025 and co-presented  by Open Ears Festival and NUMUS in Kitchener, Ontario.

The libretto of this opera consists of a series of excerpts from the famous memoirs of Francois René de Chateaubriand (1768-1848) titled Mémoires d’outre tombe, as well as poetry and letters by Francois René and his elder sister Lucile de Chateaubriand (1764-1804). The poems La Forêt, Le soir au bord de la mer, and Les adieux are from a collection titled Tableaux de la nature, written by Chateaubriand as a very young man — these poems were written with the direct encouragement of his older sister Lucile.
